The effects of medical radiation exposure in child hood can last a lifetime. As more American children are exposed to repeated diagnostic imaging examinations, experts have raised concerns about the potential harm from early medical irradiation. Radiologic technologists play a central role in radiation protection for children. This article reviews the biological effects and risks of ionizing radiation in children and protection practices that can minimize medical radiation dose to the pediatric population.
