Introduced by radiologist and cardiologist Andreas Grüntzig in 1977, percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) launched the field of interventional cardiology and ultimately prompted the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists to design the cardiac interventional postprimary exam. This report discusses the development of stents and image guidance systems for PTCA, steps involved in transluminal dilation and stenting of coronary vessels, the role of radiologic technologists in cardiac interventional procedures, health-related outcome measures and quality indicators for PTCA, and opportunities for cardiac catheterization laboratory quality improvement.
