Iodinated contrast media increase density to produce a better image of structures that would otherwise be radiolucent. If contrast media are not excreted properly, they can cause kidney toxicity. The level of toxicity is related to the patient's kidney function; better kidney function allows for more contrast excretion. Diagnostic laboratory tests help determine kidney function, and test results inform radiologic technologists about kidney complications before injecting patients to decrease adverse effects in patients.
