The kidneys are responsible for filtering wastes from the
blood and balancing water and electrolyte levels. When a valve mechanism at the
ureterovesical junction becomes impaired, urine can flow back into the ureters
and kidneys, resulting in vesicoureteral reflux (VUR). Imaging examinations
used to diagnose and grade VUR are voiding cystourethrography, radionuclide
cystography, and contrast-enhanced voiding urosonography. Understanding risks
and benefits of these imaging examinations that aid in the correct diagnosis of
VUR is important for providing adequate patient care.
