The relationship between patients and health care
professionals has an interesting history and evolution, beginning with the
traditional paternalistic approach and including more modern shared
decision-making models. Rationales for various models, examples of how the
models work in practice, and shortcomings are discussed. Rather than advocating
for either extreme (ie, paternalistic, provider-controlled decision-making or
complete patient independence in health care decision-making), supporting a
middle ground approach might be ideal. Providers must ensure patients have
enough information to make the best decisions for themselves, without coercing
or providing unnecessary information.
