With the rise in the number and proportion of lung cancers
diagnosed among female never-smokers worldwide, some research has focused on
whether using low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) as a screening tool for
never-smokers is feasible. LDCT screening has an additional risk to
consider—exposure of a healthy, asymptomatic individual to ionizing radiation.
Although the benefit of LDCT screening for individuals at high risk for lung
cancer (smoking history) immensely outweighs the risks received from the radiation
dose, the same risk to benefit scenario applied to individuals not at high risk
for lung cancer is not as favorable. Concerns of the psychological effect of
screening, radiation dose and carcinogenesis, and follow-up testing with rare
complications must be considered by researchers as they continue to pursue LDCT
as an effective screening tool in female never-smokers.
