This session presents an overview of image reconstruction in computed tomography
for radiologic technologists and will focus on three eras of CT image
reconstruction. First, the speaker will describe the era of the filtered back projection
(FBP) reconstruction algorithm, noting its limitations in low-dose CT (LDCT)
imaging. Next, the speaker will outline the second era of iterative reconstruction
algorithms and describe how iterative reconstruction solves the problems of the
FBP algorithm in LDCT. Then the speaker will highlight the limitations of iterative
reconstruction algorithms. The third era introduces the use of artificial intelligence
in CT image reconstruction as a solution to the problems of iterative reconstruction
algorithms. The speaker will describe a generalized framework of AI-based CT
image reconstruction algorithms used in two commercial CT scanners and will
finish the presentation with an overview of the ethics of AI in radiology.
