An occupational risk that plagues imaging technologists,
particularly sonographers,
is work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSD). The types of injuries
acquired vary among modalities, with user-dependent modalities like sonography
exhibiting
the highest rates of WRMSD. This typically results from the use of body
mechanics to acquire images in a protocol. As sonographers obtain individual
images, they may be required to reach, twist, or bend without support. The
purpose of this article is to explore methods of injury reduction, including
safe work practices and appropriate
use of ergonomic equipment, as well as review the benefits of developing and
implementing workplace
controls to manage the prevalence of WRMSD.
