Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), an abnormal accumulation of cells in the breast’s ducts, is commonly detected on screening mammography and treated with surgery, radiation therapy, and hormone therapy. In many cases, however, DCIS does not become invasive during a woman’s lifetime. This article provides an overview of DCIS, information on new tests to evaluate the probability that DCIS will recur or progress, and updates on ongoing clinical trials comparing standard treatment with an active surveillance approach.
