Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging stands out as a noninvasive and painless diagnostic modality, but its sensitivity to movement-related unsharpness that compromises image quality is a challenge, particularly when imaging pediatric patients because of their frequent movements and emotional and behavioral unpredictability. The use of sedatives and general anesthesia has made MR imaging of pediatric patients easier; however, the risks and benefits of various sedatives should be evaluated. To avoid or minimize adverse effects, the use of sedatives and general anesthesia should be minimized in favor of alternative techniques for obtaining quality MR images when possible.
