Advancements in medical technology, changes in patient needs, and increases in care complexity have led to the creation of specialized and advanced practice roles. In radiation therapy, the advanced practice radiation therapist (APRT) role enhances the foundational skills of the radiation therapist with advanced technical and patient-care knowledge, focusing on the complexities of treatment planning, delivery, and holistic patient management. Although no formal education program for APRT exists in the Unites States, the international 4-pillar model for advanced practice—clinical practice, education, leadership and management, and research—is a valuable resource for integrating APRT roles and developing education frameworks in the United States.
