Online adaptive radiation therapy (ART) allows for higher doses of radiation to be delivered and anatomy to be visualized through real-time motion management. However, the process is highly resource and time intensive. Employing an advanced practice radiation therapist (APRT) to perform online ART contouring can reduce the time constraints that affect physicians, as well offer a new pathway for radiation therapists, promoting career progression, retention, and stability. In 2022, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis implemented the first APRT position to perform online ART contouring, which showed positive outcomes.
