Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry uses small doses of radiation to determine the bone mineral density in an individual’s skeletal system. This article discusses scanning of the lumbar spine and hip to aid in the diagnosis of osteoporosis, to determine the risk of fracture, and in the monitoring of bone treatment therapy.
