Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scanning typically is performed to evaluate bone density levels and identify patients who might require bone therapy. The suggested sites for DXA scanning are the lumbar spine and proximal femur. However, there are situations when scans of the forearm or analysis of body composition are indicated. This article discusses the current applications of DXA scanning, radiation safety, and anatomy related to scanning procedures. In addition, scan acquisition, scan analysis, and potential scanning challenges are discussed.
