This quiz is the companion to the Directed Reading article “Carbon Ions for Radiation Therapy”.
Hadron therapy, also known as particle therapy, uses protons and carbon ions during radiation therapy and was first researched in the United States. Although proton therapy is now available in the country, carbon ion radiation therapy is not. Thanks to increased interest and funding availability carbon ions might soon be available for clinical use in the United States. This article reviews the historical development of carbon ion therapy, its advantages over proton and photon therapy, the production of a clinical carbon ion beam, and the results of clinical trials.
