Imaging children is one of the most fascinating and worthwhile specialties in radiography, but it comes with a number of distinct challenges. Some of these challenges include dedicated imaging protocols to acquire the images, the possible need for sedation or general anesthesia for longer procedures such as MRI, specific training for the healthcare personnel involved, and most importantly, it requires special consideration for radiation exposure. One of the challenges for clinical care personnel is to gain the child's trust and co-operation for the duration of an examination, which can prove to be difficult for children who may be ill or experiencing pain. The increased radiation sensitivity of growing organs and the longer expected life span of children also make them more susceptible to the harmful effects of radiation. In order to minimize the harmful effects of ionizing radiation, the As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) principle should be strictly followed. This presentation seeks to draw attention to the unique challenges of pediatric imaging and the best ways to overcome them.
