This presentation examines the changing nature of patient education and why radiologic technologists must take a role in educating patients. Radiographers are in the 'front line' of patient care. As a result, patients often have more interaction with radiographers than with physicians or other medical specialists. Radiographers who practice effective communication techniques with their patients can alleviate anxiety and make an important contribution to the overall satisfaction of the patient with respect to the quality of service and care they receive. The practice standards and the scope of practice as they relate to patient education also will be discussed. The elements of effective communication are discussed, along with barriers to learning and ways to assess a patient’s readiness to learn. The presentation concludes with patient education examples drawn from radiography.
