Cancer registries provide health care practitioners and cancer researchers with accurate and timely data needed in their efforts to reduce cancer incidence, morbidity, and mortality rates. This article describes cancer registries and discusses the history of cancer registration, primary cancer registries in the United States, and uses of cancer registry data in cancer surveillance.
