There are millions of children and adults with diabetes in the United States, a total of about 9.4% of the population. Most people with diabetes have related health problems or risk factors such as high blood pressure and cholesterol that increase one's risk for heart disease and stroke. This presentation will explain Type I, Type II diabetes, gestational diabetes and pre-diabetes. Because so many people have this disease, R.T.s often see them as patients. If the patient is taking a medication for the disease, it is important to understand how this may affect exam preparation. Neuropathy is a common medical condition that results from diabetes, and affects how we work with patients since they may not feel pain and may not be able to identify the location of problems, or even recognize that positioning is causing problems for them. It is also important to recognize the signs and symptoms of diabetic reactions and how to respond.
