The Francis Report recommended an increased focus on compassion in healthcare, and recognition and non-judgmental acceptance of diverse patient populations is fundamental in compassionate patient care. The radiologic technology profession takes seriously its responsibility to set and maintain high standards of professional practice in order to ensure a safe environment for both imaging professionals and their patients. In a service-oriented industry such as healthcare, the ability to understand the feelings and needs of patients and their families is crucial to optimize care and customer service. This presentation will discuss the importance of soft skills in the clinical environment. Soft skills include professionalism, communication, critical thinking, conflict resolution, emotional intelligence and cultural competence. Strong soft skills ensure a productive, collaborative and healthy work environment, which are vital attributes of successful organizations. Standards related to soft skills, such as the practice standards and the scope of practice, will also be discussed.
