Since its inception in the early 1970s, CT imaging has undergone remarkable technologic advances, making it an invaluable tool in medical diagnosis. Unfortunately, the underestimation of how CT radiation exposure increases cancer risk, combined with an overestimation of its necessity by providers and patients, have led to over-utilization and a marked increase in radiation exposure to the general population. This portion of our three-part program speaks to the sources of concern about CT radiation dose.
