Osteogenesis imperfecta, also known as brittle-bone disease, is an inherited disorder affecting the skeletal system that causes bones to become fragile and easily broken without specific injury. An estimated 20,000 to 50,000 cases are suspected in the United States. Because these patients’ bones are so susceptible to fracture, special care must be taken by medical imaging professionals to protect patients from additional harm during examinations. This presentation will investigate the causes, symptoms, and types of osteogenesis imperfecta, review images of affected bones, and discuss ways to prevent additional injuries to these patients during imaging studies.
