The simplified radiation therapy goal is to treat the correction location with the correct dose while minimizing the dose that healthy tissue receives. The complexity of radiation therapy planning and treatment delivery has increased exponentially, and the addition of complex equipment, variable collimation, and the increased reliance on technology has led to radiation therapy treatment complications. The American Association of Physicists in Medicine TG-100 report and process map offers a risk-based quality management evaluation for radiation therapy treatment. The report and process map can decrease the potential for risk and failure during a course of radiation therapy. Evaluating potential risks helps prevent failures and safety protocol breaches. This article discusses strengths and weaknesses of the risk-based quality management program to improve patient safety and enhance quality.
