Astrocytoma is a tumor in the central nervous system that grows from astrocytes, a glial cell. Most astrocytomas are benign and have a cure rate of more than 90%. Symptoms vary according to the tumor size and its location in the central nervous system. The 4 grades, or levels, of astrocytoma are based on how likely it is the tumor will spread and become malignant. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance technologists must understand which sequences deliver the best and most informative images for an accurate diagnosis.
