Hematometrocolpos is not common, but can be easily detected with the help of sonography. Hematometrocolpos is a medical condition in which menstrual blood accumulates in the uterus and vagina over time, caused by an outflow obstruction. The most common obstruction that leads to hematometrocolpos is a congenital imperforate hymen. Other less common causes include: a vaginal septum, vaginal hypoplasia, and an acquired mass. Most often, the obstruction that leads to blood retention is present at the time of birth, but hematometrocolpos usually is not identified until after the onset of menarche. ???
