Over the past 30 years, breast imaging as a screen for breast cancer has dramatically changed the typical course of this disease: in the United States, the breast cancer death rate has dropped by 45%. An overview of the various imaging tests used for breast cancer screening will be presented, beginning with mammography, and extending through ultrasound, MRI, Molecular Breast Imaging, contrast-enhanced mammography, tomosynthesis (3-D mammography), and concluding with the most powerful screening tool of the future: abbreviated MRI. In addition, the controversy swirling around when and how often women should be screened will be addressed, with a review of the overwhelming scientific evidence that screening must be performed yearly beginning at age 40 to be most effective in preventing breast cancer deaths.
