Advances in technology and clinical treatment methods have led to a rise in fluoroscopy use. Coinciding with this trend is an increase in reported radiation-induced injuries from fluoroscopy. Operators of fluoroscopy units, including radiologic technologists, radiologist assistants, radiologists and other physicians, must have a thorough understanding of how imaging chain components and radiation safety features optimize diagnostic imaging quality and keep radiation exposure to as low as reasonably achievable. This knowledge is especially important as new equipment features become available.
In addition to describing various fluoroscopic equipment configurations, Anne Scott, B.S.R.S., R.T.(R), discusses specific elements of fixed fluoroscopy units that affect radiation dose and methods to protect patients and imaging personnel.
