This article describes how 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose and 18F-sodium fluoride can be used in the detection and characterization of active atherosclerosis in its early stage. The article also explains how 18F-sodium fluoride PET imaging is used to provide individualized measurements of microcalcification in the heart, the aorta, carotids, and other major arteries.
