This article discusses the role of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)–PET scanning in pretreatment evaluation for lung cancer patients who are good candidates for radiation therapy. The radiation treatment planning process using hybrid scanners and response-adapted therapy using PET images are discussed, as well as how uptake of FDG in irradiated tissues can affect the diagnosis and management of radiation-induced toxicity
