This presentation will review bone anatomy and physiology. We will discuss the important role of bones both mechanically and metabolically, and discuss what osteoporosis is and why it occurs. We will consider what the DXA machine measures and how it gathers information. Proper reporting of T or Z –scores will be discussed, along with the areas of the body that are measured and how to get a quality analysis. We will discuss precision assessment and its importance, as well as the role the technologist plays in patient care and diagnosis. The importance of FRAX® and how it affects doctor’s decisions on treatment options will be covered, and we will touch on TBS and how it is interpreted. Lastly, the current and newest indications for BMD testing will be presented.
