Using geometric and trigonometric principles can help radiographers determine proper distance and central ray alignment when angulation of the tube is required. Primary consequences of using incorrect distance are increased radiation exposure to the patient and changes to magnification of the part and spatial resolution. Although calculations can be performed before or during the examination, technologists can refer to a chart containing the preferred source-to-image distances and tube angles for the more common axial views encountered in a diagnostic radiology department.
