This article examines the importance of MR imaging as a diagnostic tool in the assessment of injured or acutely ill patients in emergency settings, and how diffusion-weighted imaging is used to evaluate nonischemic disorders. The potential for various infectious, traumatic, toxic, or metabolic processes to show diffusion abnormalities is also discussed.
