Shoulder radiography is classified into two types of protocols which are based on the clinical indication for the exam; trauma protocols and non-trauma protocols. Imaging of the shoulder girdle presents many challenges even for a seasoned technologist. Trauma shoulder radiography can add an additional layer of difficulty because of the patient's reduced capacity to actively cooperate. This presentation will cover three main areas of shoulder imaging: positioning, anatomy, and image analysis. By the end of this lecture, the learner should be able to critically analyze properly positioned shoulder radiographs and recognize common positioning mistakes made in shoulder radiography as well as how to avoid them.
