Bacteria are responsible for about 90% of hospital-acquired infections. All hospital patients are susceptible to contracting an infection, but some (eg, infants, young children, the elderly, and the immunocompromised) are at the greatest risk. Contact with infection-causing bacteria presents a substantial problem in the radiology department. As a vital member of the health care team, the radiologic technologist has a responsibility to protect a patient in his or her care from infection. The best way to keep patients and health care workers safe from infections is to practice proper infection control—using disinfection, following standard precautions, and using personal protective equipment.
