We will evaluate the biological effects of ionizing radiation and review the principles of dose reduction for patients and staff. Participants should expect to learn about System International units used to quantify radiation dosage, the importance of shielding and minimum shielding requirements, concepts of radiation protection during portable and fluoroscopic examinations, primary and secondary radiation sources and dosimetry. Additionally, we will review the concepts of ALARA and the importance of time, distance and shielding in dose reduction.
