Chest radiography makes up the largest percentage of radiographic examinations done on a daily basis. In fact, chest radiography makes up nearly 75% of daily exam volumes for many departments. This is partly because this exam has a high diagnostic yield of information, while also being convenient from the perspective of dose, cost, exam logistics, patient tolerance, exam conditions, and portability. However, any radiologist will tell you that a poorly positioned chest study can do more harm than good. There are many subtle features on a chest image the radiologist is looking for, and poor patient positioning can jeopardize its diagnostic value. This presentation will look at the effects of poor positioning on the clinical value of a simple chest radiograph, and the role of the technologist in optimizing image quality.
