The elderly population constitutes a sizable portion of patients seeking health care services, including medical imaging and radiation therapy. To help ensure these patients’ comfort, safety, care, and cooperation, technologists first should evaluate them and their needs without bias or stereotyping because of age. For elderly patients who do exhibit challenges related to the aging process (eg, auditory, visual, mental, and physical), technologists can improve the overall examination experience with good communication, clear directions, altering routine positioning techniques when possible, taking extra time, being patient, and being empathetic.
