This quiz is the companion to the Directed Reading article “Merkel Cell Carcinoma”.
Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a type of skin cancer that mainly affects older and immunosuppressed individuals. Research has shown that many patients with MCC have been exposed to Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCP yV). MCP yV often is found in healthy skin, but because patients with MCC often are older and immunosuppressed, they might be more susceptible to MCPyV. Surgery is the primary approach to treatment; however, radiation therapy alone or in conjunction with immunotherapy is a viable treatment option for some patients. This article discusses the etiology of MCC, treatment options, and the radiation therapist’s role in treating patients with MCC.
