Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma are cancers that commonly are confused because they both begin in the lymphatic system; however, they vary in presentation, pathological symptoms, and treatment. Treatment options include chemotherapy, stem cell transplants, immunotherapy, and radiation therapy. A benefit for patients when comparing proton radiation therapy with photon radiation therapy is that proton radiation therapy offers greater potential for sparing vital organs excessive radiation. For patients undergoing radiation treatment, breath-hold techniques also can be beneficial. In addition, this article highlights 2 case studies demonstrating the benefits of proton therapy for patients with Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
