In the United States, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in females. This presentation will focus on the role that radiation therapy plays in the treatment of this disease. The use of radiation therapy is dependent on several factors, ranging from stage of the patient’s disease to their body habitus. Treatment unit capabilities and beam geometry will be reviewed to assess the effect of beam geometry and divergence, along with common methods of incorporating them into the planning process. This presentation will take the participant through the common methodologies used to set-up, plan and deliver curative radiation therapy to the breast. Common acute side-effects will be discussed, as well as long-term and follow-up regimens.
