This presentation reviews the biological effects of radiation on living matter. While the desired biological effect on malignant tumors is cell kill, the desired effect on normal cells is cell preservation. In clinical radiation therapy, a balance between the goal of tumor eradication must be weighed against the desire to protect adjacent normal tissues and reduce the damage that is inevitable when delivering external beam radiation.
