Chest radiography examinations are the most requested and performed radiological procedure in the United States. Chest radiography can be performed in the radiology department, or bedside with a portable radiography machine for those patients who cannot be transported to the radiology department. Approximately half of the chest radiographs obtained in many medical centers are obtained via portable radiography. Chest radiographs obtained in the department are of higher diagnostic value than are those obtained bedside. Having in place a department protocol for portable chest radiography will help ensure that quality images are obtained consistently, the ALARA principle is followed, repeat examinations are reduced, and unnecessary radiation exposure to patients is prevented.
This quiz is the companion to the column, "Benefits and Limitations of Portable Chest Radiography," which appears in the January/February 2021 Radiologic Technology journal.
