An aortic dissection is a life-threatening condition in which the tunica intima of the aorta tears and creates a false lumen. As blood flows through the false lumen, the layers of the aorta continue to separate, which is known as a dissection. The signs and symptoms of aortic dissection are similar to those of other medical emergency situations such as myocardial infarctions. Medical imaging has a vital role in diagnosing aortic dissections. Screening processes might include chest radiography or electrocardiography to help differentiate between conditions, and computed tomography is the gold standard for a definitive diagnosis. In addition, many surgical repairs are performed with thoracic endovascular aortic repair, and routine follow-up imaging is performed to monitor changes.
This quiz is the companion to the column, "Detecting Aortic Dissections," which appears in the March/April 2021 Radiologic Technology journal.
