This presentation will describe the need for a range shifter device positioned close to the patient during proton beam radiation therapy with fixed nozzle pencil beam scanning for treatment of shallow tumor types. We will also discuss how this need was satisfied by the invention of the range shifter helmet for use on proton beam therapy patients. The presentation introduces pencil beam proton radiation therapy, the requirements for treating shallow tumors with pencil beam proton therapy, the specifications involved in the creation of the range shifter helmet, and the initial implementation and future uses of the helmet.
