Patients with substance use disorders (SUD) often must receive diagnostic imaging in the acute care setting, including computed tomography and radiography examinations. These patients might display behaviors that make performing imaging examinations challenging and require compassionate care and patience during examinations. Radiologic technologists should show empathy toward patients with SUD. In practicing self-awareness, learning about substance use disorders, and using techniques for imaging this patient population, technologists can offer quality patient care while reducing compassion fatigue.
