This quiz is the companion to the Directed Reading article "Computed Tomography for Emergent Brain Injuries".
Cerebral injuries account for many hospital emergency department admissions following trauma and can lead to short-term and long-term adverse effects, including increased mortality rates. Traumatic brain injuries encompass several neurological issues, such as hemorrhages, hematomas, concussions, and edema. Neurological assessment using the Glasgow Coma Scale and computed tomography (CT) are essential in finding cerebral lesions and initiating immediate neurosurgical or medical interventions. Head CT scans, including dual-energy, sequential, and helical, provide physicians a deeper understanding of the level of trauma. With fast scan times and reconstructive algorithms, CT is the modality of choice in trauma cases.
