Foot and ankle pain and other symptoms are often due to injuries such as sprain or fracture, but can also be caused by joint instability, arthritis, gout, tendonitis, nerve compression, or infection. Osteomyelitis in the foot is a common concern for elderly and diabetic populations due to poor peripheral circulation. If conservative treatments for foot or ankle symptoms are ineffective, an MRI may be ordered because it provides the most accurate information about the soft tissues involved in foot and ankle pathologies. This presentation describes the basic elements of an MRI exam of the foot and ankle.
