This Directed Reading compares the responses of film screen and digital detectors to radiation and explains the need for dose optimization in digital radiography in terms of the stochastic and deterministic health effects of radiation exposure. Strategies for optimizing technical factors in digital radiography are provided, as well as how the exposure indicator, deviation index, and diagnostic reference levels can be used to understand radiation dose.
