Those who have experienced intimate partner violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, or child maltreatment may feel distressed and anxious during medical encounters. Invasive medical evaluations such as gynecological examinations, and even innocuous ones like abdominal palpation, can trigger intense reactions. In recent years, the term trauma-informed care has been used to describe ways in which health care providers can better serve patients who have experienced traumatic life events. These trauma-informed practices can reduce the likelihood of re-traumatization within the health care setting. This presentation provides an overview of trauma-informed care, including guiding principles, best practices, and protocol development, to help medical imaging professionals deliver more effective care, enhance patient engagement, and improve health outcomes.
