Benjamin Roberts, M.F.A., R.T.(R)(T)(CT)
Abscesses arise from complications of surgery and disease. Computed tomography (CT) facilitates abscess drainage procedures while reducing the risks associated with surgery. This presentation focuses on CT-guided drainage of abdominal abscesses. The anatomy, physiology, pathology, and access routes for all the major abscess locations within the abdomen are discussed, followed by generalized procedure steps to include patient positioning, IV contrast usage, imaging techniques, dose reduction, room preparation, informed consent, and coordination of care across various health professions. Complications and future considerations for CT-guided interventional procedures are also discussed.
